England Using Barcodes To Improve Election System
Philly Barcodes is interested in all areas of data input, obviously. One new use has come to light recently in England. In an effort to ensure secure elections, at least 10 voting districts are looking at including scannable cards for Voter Identification in local elections.
Room For Improvement
The process is somewhat collaborative with local charities and organizations. The government wants to make sure disadvantaged groups of the population aren’t hurt by the added technology. Trials carried out in May 2018 didn’t bring favorable results from critics. Voter ID was required to enter the voting booth.
Various Methods
Some voters will receive poll cards with scannable barcodes for 2019. There are other methods in trial. Included in that still includes photo ID. There is also a mix of photo and non-photo ID requirements. In addition, traditional paper poll cards will be used. England’s government seems dedicated to improving technology and taking all factors in to account so that this is a success in their future elections.
