Amazon has announced interest in switching its measurement system from square footage to cubic feet. This follows the increasing trend of warehouses needing to build their shelves in height with increasing inventory levels. As we’ve discussed before, inventory increases are necessary as a result of increasing e-commerce competition.
City Locations
Location also plays in to the need to adapt warehouse space up, rather than out. Companies and warehouses prefer to be closer to their customers That tends to be in the city. Multi-story warehouses have begun popping up to help solve this space issue in metropolitan locations.
Amazon reported 200 million square feet of warehouse space at the end of 2017. It expects a 15% growth in 2018.

While the online retailer is also implementing robots and automation, warehouses may be able to keep pace with their own inventory and spacing changes with technology upgrades.
